Hunger is the number one health risk in the world. One in eight people go to bed hungry each night. And lack of food leads to dehydration, malnourishment, weakened immune systems and impaired brain function, among other things. Close to 3 billion people live on less than $5 per day. And that’s $5 a day for all of life’s expenses — food, transportation, housing, emergencies, etc. Many of us spend twice that amount on our morning cup of coffee.

It’s difficult to imagine having a satisfying meal for $5, let alone only having $5 to try and meet all of the needs that come up during a day. However, our $5 Dinner Challenge will help with this a little bit. It’ll give you a small taste of what life is like for children and families living in extreme poverty.

Take $5 in cash from your purse or wallet, and put the rest of your money aside, including your checkbook and your credit or debit cards.

As a family, go to your local grocery store. Walk around the store and make a list of what food you can get for $5. Then use your $5 to buy food to feed everyone dinner; just one meal.

We provide our patients with medical consultation at Rs.80 and 1-week supply of medications for free. We also provide subsidized spectacles. Cataract and pterygium surgeries are also provided for free, in collaboration with Rotary Eye Hospitals, with patients only bearing the travelling expenses.

It is not their lack of theoretical knowledge that causes this. Instead, it is the lack of right skills and attitude. There is thus, an increasing concern among the leading employers of the country, about the dearth of ready-to-deliver employees. In addition, the macro perspective affirms that, it is crucial for the energy of the youth to be channelized properly with proper direction to aid economic growth and nation building to elude their addition to family woes, social stress and national misery.

This national level programme trains the urban youth in English Proficiency, Basic Computer Education and Soft Skills for enhancing their prospects of employment in the fast expanding retail, hospitality and BPO sectors.

So far, 53,000 youth have been trained and 33,000 have been placed in over 500 brands through 83 operational projects across India.
